The Apparitions of The Blessed Virgin Mary On May 13, 1917 the three children – Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco took their flock of sheep to a natural hollow in the ground known as the Cova da Iria to graze, just outside the town of Fatima in Portugal.
However, since that time there have been instances throughout history where Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary has honored this Earth with her presence via private Apparitions, such as the church approved apparitions, most notably, to Bernadette Soubirous at the Grotto in Lourdes France and to the 3 young children at Fatima in Portugal.
Portugal is located on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula, ideally positioned between Spain and the Atlantic ocean. Its geographic location along the Atlantic coastline is the reason why quickly became an ocean-bound country setting the stage for centuries of sea adventure and discoveries.
