Early in 1504, even as the David received its finishing touches, Michelangelo was already at work on a free-standing marble statue of the Madonna and Child. The Bruges Madonna, as it is known today, thus followed Michelangelo’s Pieta in St. Peter’s by only five years.

The Church of Our Lady (Dutch: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk) in Bruges, Belgium, dates mainly from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Its tower, at 115 metres (377 ft) in height, remains the tallest structure in the city and the second tallest brickwork tower in the world (the tallest being the St. Martin's Church in Landshut, Germany).
Michelangelo finished this small (only 50 inches) Madonna and Child marble statue in 1504. Originally part of a commission of 15 statues for Pope Pius III, the project was discontinued following the completion of just this one piece.
