In the center of town lies the great Monastery of Izamal, which houses one of the most venerated Marian statues in all of Mexico. To this statue are attributed thousands of miracles of healing. The usual Christian explanation for these miracles is that the prayers of the pilgrims call forth the benevolence and therapeutic powers of Mary.
The eyes of the Virgin's statue were raised and seen gazing afar. The pilgrims also witnessed the rosary moving, as if the statue was fingering the rosary. The Carmel Chapel. On January 23, 1949, the cornerstone was laid for the future Church of Our Lady, Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, officiated by Bishop Alfredo Obviar.
